India vs Afghanistan: Second T20 cricket match – as it happened

India win the T20I series against Afghanistan after another stellar performance in Indore.

Jaiswal and Dube combined superbly to lead India to a rollicking six-wicket victory.

Spare a thought for the visitors though, who posted their highest T20I score against India in their own back yard.

The final T20I of the series will be played on January 17 in Bengaluru.

Afghanistan will be hoping to get one over the hosts given that it will be a dead rubber.

India, on the other hand, would be tempted to test out their depth given the 2024 T20 World Cup looming on the horizon.

We hope you enjoyed our coverage of today’s match and on behalf of Al Jazeera Sport, this is Rohan Sharma signing off.

Axar wins Man of the Match

After his miserly spell of 2 for 17 in four overs, Axar is duly judged the Man of the Match.

‘The last two games we played, we ticked almost every box’

Winning India captain Rohit shares his thoughts: “It is a great feeling [getting to 150 T20Is]. Honestly it has been a long journey, starting way back from 2007 till now. I have cherished every moment I have spent here.”

“We were very clear on what we wanted to do and achieve. When you see a performance like that, you can feel really proud of it as well.”

“It is one thing to talk about it, and it is another thing to go out to do it. So it’s a good positive for us moving forward,” he said.

“The last two games we played, we ticked almost every box. We have tried different things in the Powerplay, the back end and during the middle overs as well.”

“They have had a tremendous couple of years. Jaiswal has played in all three formats and has shown what he is capable of. He showed the talent quite early and now that he has the opportunity, he has taken it fully.”

“Dube is a big guy, who is very powerful. He can take down the spinners, and that is his role. We have asked him to go out and do that for the team, and he has gone out to do that in the last two innings.”

‘We had a good start, but weren’t as good in the middle’

Afghanistan skipper Zadran shared his views during the post-match presentation: “We were quite short [on the runs]. We had a good start but then not very good after that.”

“Sometimes we play well in the Powerplay, sometimes in the middle, and sometimes at the death. We need to build momentum throughout and not repeat the same mistakes. If we do this, we will have a good [2024 T20] World Cup.”

“He [Naib] is the most senior guy on the team. We put trust on him. When he came to the crease he played a few shots in the Powerplay. I told him to take that momentum to the end.”
