Union Minister Amit Shah reiterates Modi govt’s ‘zero tolerance’ policy towards terrorism in Rajya Sabha

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday reaffirmed Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government’s zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism while addressing the Rajya Sabha during a discussion on the functioning of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

He criticised previous administrations for their softer approach to terror and highlighted the structural reforms undertaken in the last decade.

Acknowledging the sacrifices made by security personnel, Shah expressed gratitude to state police forces and central paramilitary personnel who have laid down their lives to strengthen internal security and border protection.

“First of all, I express my gratitude to thousands of state police and central paramilitary force jawans who made the supreme sacrifice to strengthen the country’s internal security as well as borders,” he stated. Shah emphasised that while law and order is a state subject, national security, border management, and internal security fall under the MHA’s jurisdiction. He pointed out that evolving security challenges, such as cybercrime, narcotics, hawala transactions, and organized crime networks, transcend state boundaries and often originate from outside the country.

“Several kinds of crime do not remain limited to state borders. They are both inter-state as well as multi-state – like narcotics, cybercrime, organized crime gangs, hawala. Some crimes are even executed from outside India. Keeping all this in view, it becomes essential to make changes in MHA,” he explained.

The Union Minister asserted that in the last ten years, Modi government has introduced long-overdue reforms in the MHA, strengthening national security mechanisms and enabling better coordination in handling inter-state and cross-border crimes.

“I say this with pride that in 10 years, PM Narendra Modi made long-overdue changes to the MHA at once to ensure national security,” he added.
