After being elected to Rajya Sabha uncontested, former Assam chief minister and union minister, Sarbananda Sonowal resigned from Majuli assembly seat.Sarma said holding election in Majuli is constitutional requirement. “In the run up to by polls our ministers, MLAs workers of the party and allies have worked very hard. These has enthused people in several constituencies. People in two or three constituencies wants by-polls. However, I cannot say when the same will be held.”He added, “The party is preparing for civic bodies polls. If COVID-19 situation is under control Civic body polls will be held in February next year.”In the 126-member assembly BJP won 60 seats which is similar to the number it won five years ago. The Asom Gana Parishad won nine seats against 14 seats last time, while the new alliance partner, United People’s Party Liberal, got six seats, one of its MLA died due post COVID complications. In the by polls it won two seats and increased the tally to seven.Congress in this year’s assembly polls won 29 seats, two MLAs left the party and contested the by polls and won.All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) won 14 seats, however one MLA left and joined BJP and won in by polls. Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) won four seats and following death of one MLA its number came down to three.A BJP leader who don’t want to be named told ET, “The party on its own will touch the majority figure of 64 however our alliance will continue..”
