Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was on Wednesday detained and subsequently allowed to visit the family of a sanitation worker, belonging to the Valmiki community, who was allegedly killed in the police custody in Agra. She was allowed to travel with four others as the police imposed sections 144 and restricted gatherings. The development came on the heels of the Lakhimpur Kheri incident which also saw Gandhi Vadra in the lead in reaching out to families of the farmers’ after a prolonged detention by the police. The case pertains to the death of a sanitation worker, Arun Kumar, who was accused of stealing ’25 lakh from Jagdishpura police station in Agra. According to Muniraj G, SSP of Agra, Kumar had admitted to the theft and revealed he had hid the money at his home following which he was taken to his house and a sum of ’15 lakh was recovered. “During recovery, his health suddenly deteriorated and he was rushed to the hospital by the police and his family members, but was declared brought dead.”
