GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that the State government has already urged the Union Petroleum Ministry to engaged specialists for dousing fire at Baghjan gas oil site Chief Minister Sonowal on Thursday said, “State government has already urged the Union Petroleum Ministry to engaged specialists for dousing fire at Baghjan gas oil, besides requesting OIL and the ministry to release adequate compensation to affected families”. The gas producing well blew out on May 27. It exploded into a massive inferno on June 9. Earlier two persons, both are employees of OIL’s fire service wing, have died there. On September 2 last in state assembly Assam’s Industry and Commerce Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said that dousing of fire in Baghjan will take at least six to eight weeks more however the well is expected to be brought under control in next 10 days. The minister said that experts with specialised equipment from Canada will soon join the operation. He said “Earlier attempts to douse the fire which included experts of Alert Disaster Control of Singapore have failed but OIL and other agencies are working in a co-ordinated way to douse the fire.”
