Exodus from Assam Congress continues, Thowra MLA Borgohain likely to join BJP on Saturday

Thowra MLA Sushanta Borgohain resigned from Congress on Friday. Borgohain has submitted his resignation letter to the party President Bhupen Borah.Attempts to change Borgohain’s mind failed. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) Rana Goswam told media persons that he had talked to Sushanta however the MLA has made up his mind. “ Borgohain told me that he has given word to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.”Bhabesh Kalita, BJP’s Assam unit president has confirmed that Thowra MLA will soon join the party.

He is likely to join on August 1. Sushanta in the resignation letter appreciated the opportunities given to him by the Congress, but stated that due to some recent developments, he won’t be able to continue any longer.Next month legislator, Phanidhar Talukdar of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) from Bhabanipur seat is also expected to join the BJP.Talukdar said, “The chief minister has promised to give a development package for the constituency. What I cannot accomplish in 10 years will be achieved in three months with the help of the package.”BJP in Assam is expecting that as many as five seats will go for bye polls shortly.Assam went to assembly polls in March-April this year. Recently Former Assam unit BJP President Ranjit Kumar Dass recently said bye-elections will be held in Tamulpur, Gosaigaon, Mariani constituencies besides two other constituencies in Assam in the next six months.While one Congress MLA, Rupjyoti Kurmi has resigned and joined BJP, there are two other seats which have fallen vacant due to the death of MLA. Majuli seat has fallen vacant as former Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal was inducted in the Union Council of ministers. Sonowal is likely to get elected from Rajya Sabha asRajya Sabha MP Biswajit Daimary had resigned last year from the Upper House and he is now Speaker of the state assembly.Tamulpur constituency MLA, Leho Ram Boro of the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) died of COVID-19. Gossaigaon MLA Majendra Narzary of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) died following post-Covid complications.The UPPL is an ally of the BJP, which is heading the government in Assam. The BJP-led NDA secured 75 seats in the 126-member assembly, 11 seats less than in 2016.The BJP won 60 seats which is similar to the number it won five years ago. The Asom Gana Parishad won nine seats against 14 seats last time, while the new alliance partner, United People’s Party Liberal, got six seats.A BJP leader told ET,”, “By winning these seats BJP on its own will be close to the majority mark of 64. Already preparations have started for the bye polls.”Prior to the polls, Ajanta Neog and Rajdeep Goala were the other Congress leaders in the state who had left the party. Neog is a minister in the present government.Sushanta Borgohain told media persons there is no scope to work in Congress. ” I thought I would stay in Congress throughout my life however there is no scope for work. Congress leadership in New Delhi is caught in an internal crisis.”Barnali Saikia Bora has also resigned from the post general secretary and primary membership of Congress
