Excise policy scam: SC gives Arvind Kejriwal liberty to move trial court for regular bail

The Supreme Court of India on Friday gave Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal the liberty to move trial court for regular bail in money laundering case related to the alleged excise policy scam.

A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta reserved its judgement after hearing senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi and Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, who appeared for Kejriwal and the Enforcement Directorate, respectively.

“Arguments heard. Judgement reserved. Notwithstanding the same, and without prejudice to rights and contentions, the appellant can move the trial court for grant of bail in accordance with law,” the bench said in its order.

The top court perused the case files and statements of the witnesses and accused recorded after October 30, 2023, the day senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia’s bail plea was rejected. Sisodia is an accused in both the corruption and money laundering case linked to the alleged scam.Meanwhile, ED today filed a chargesheet against Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party in the case and also named the party as accused, giving a new turn to the matter.

Kejriwal has been granted interim bail by the apex court till June 1 to campaign in the Lok Sabha elections. He will have to surrender and go back to jail on June 2.

June 1 is the last day of the seven-phase elections and the votes will be counted on June 4.

Kejriwal earlier alleged that efforts were made to break and humiliate him during judicial custody in Tihar.”There were two CCTV cameras inside my cell in Tihar and the feed was monitored by 13 officers. It was said that the CCTV feed was also provided to PMO. Modi ji was monitoring me… I do not know what grudge Modi has against me,” he claimed.”I have to go back to jail on June 2. I will be watching the election results inside jail on June 4. If the INDIA bloc comes to power, I will be back on June 5,” he told AAP party councillors last week.
