Dream has come true as people have started choosing government hospitals over private ones: Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI: Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that he will wrap up his public life when people choose government hospitals over the private hospitals.Speaking at the Ceremonial Distribution of Appointment Letters to Staff Nurses under NHM in Guwahati, Sarma said, “I have been associated with the health department since 2006 and barring one year I was there for almost 14 years. We know how difficult it was to set up an ICU, bring people to work, and make appointments of staff .”He said, “However during the COVID19 pandemic things changed, I had dream that between Guwahati medical college and hospital (GMCH) and private nursing home, a person calls us and tells he want to get admitted in GMCH with this I wanted to warp up my public life. This was my dream when I took over as health minister in 2006.”Sarma left congress and joined BJP in 2015 just a year ahead of Assam election and scripted BJP’s win in Assam.Sarma said, “In 2008 and 2009 I my speech I had repeatedly said this. Gradually I thought it was not possible. Initially during the COVID -19 people were kept in the government established COVID care Centre, later some people started complaining about the food and treatment beside ill treatment and wanted home isolation.” The minister said, “In last 45 days I repeatedly get calls asking that my family is unwell and want a paying cabin in GMCH, if I say Cabin is occupied, they plead if the same can be accommodated in the general ward. I suggested a couple of them go to a nursing home which they refused. The dream which I saw in 2006 I see coming true in the last one month.”

The minister added that COVID patients’ first choice is medical college only when seats are not available they think of going to private hospital. “People now realise when government machinery works nothing can compete with them. “
