Speaking in the Lok Sabha during the debate on the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, Shah alleged that 450 km of fencing work remains incomplete due to non-cooperation from the Mamata Banerjee-led government.
“The fencing work of 450 km is pending because the West Bengal government is not giving land for it,” Shah said, adding that the ruling party in the state has repeatedly hindered security efforts. He further alleged that whenever authorities attempt to proceed with fencing, “ruling party workers indulge in hooliganism and religious sloganeering.”
The India-Bangladesh border, stretching over 2,200 km, has long been a contentious issue, with reports of unchecked movement across porous areas.
TMC demands completion of fencing
Rajya Sabha Trinamool Congress MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray on Thursday called on the central government to expedite the fencing of the India-Bangladesh border on a war footing. Raising the issue during Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha, Ray highlighted that 865 km of the 4,096.7 km border remains unfenced, posing security concerns.
West Bengal, which shares the longest land border with Bangladesh at 2,217 km, faces frequent infiltration and security threats, he said.
Ray cited objections from Bangladesh’s Border Guard (BGB) as a major challenge in completing the fencing, particularly in areas like Sukhdevpur in Malda, where local residents, police, and the Border Security Force (BSF) recently thwarted an incident.
