Ajit Pawar reaffirms NCP’s commitment to secularism; Calls for transparency in Ladki Bahin scheme

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Monday reiterated his party’s commitment to secularism and progressive politics, while warning against divisive tactics and corruption, reported TOI. Speaking at the inauguration of the NCP’s district office in Jalna, Pawar stressed the importance of unity and social harmony in Maharashtra and issued a call for party workers to maintain transparency in their activities.

“Maharashtra has always been a beacon of progressive thought and social harmony. The NCP stands firmly for unity and secularism. We will not allow anyone to spread hatred or indulge in divisive politics,” Pawar stated, according to the report.

He urged party workers to be cautious when inducting new members, advising them to avoid admitting individuals with questionable backgrounds. “Ensure transparency in your actions, and do not let corruption or divisiveness creep into our party,” he added.

Ladki Bahin Yojana

Pawar also addressed the Ladki Bahin Yojana, a state government initiative aimed at providing financial assistance to economically disadvantaged women. He revealed that the state government had allocated Rs 3,700 crore to the Women and Child Development (WCD) Department for the scheme, fulfilling a key electoral promise, noted TOI. However, the Deputy CM called on beneficiaries earning an annual income of Rs 2.5 lakh and above to voluntarily opt out of the program, urging them to make way for those truly in need.

“This scheme is meant to benefit economically disadvantaged women, but unfortunately, even women who file income tax are availing themselves of the benefits,” Pawar explained.

“I urge them to step back so that the aid can reach those who truly need it.” He added that eligible women would begin receiving their Rs 1,500 monthly allowances by January 26, said TOI.

Criticism of opposition’s EVM stance

Pawar also criticised opposition parties for their inconsistent stance on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). “When they win elections in states like Karnataka and West Bengal, they praise EVMs. But when they lose, they blame the same machines,” he remarked, accusing them of hypocrisy.TOI further noted that the remarks came amidst ongoing debates and controversies over the credibility of EVMs, with opposition parties questioning their reliability after recent electoral losses.
