The High Court of Manipur has ordered verification of the date of birth of all young voters in the Heirok assembly constituency who appear to be around 18 years of age, the minimum age for voting. Such voters must produce two separate documents of proof of age at the polling station on Saturday, the day of voting.Such voters may produce their passport, birth certificate, Class-10 certificate, Aadhaar card, election identity card, or any other authenticated document certifying the date of birth. The high court order came in response to a public interest litigation, which alleged that there were underaged voters on the voter list.
Separate verification counters will be set up in all polling stations so that no inconvenience is caused to other voters, chief electoral officer of Manipur Rajesh Agrawal said.”The district election officer, Thoubal, and returning officer, 33-Heirok assembly constituency, have been instructed to take adequate necessary actions. All stakeholders including political parties, candidates, BLOs, polling officials have also been informed accordingly,” he said.
