Most state legislatures in India sit for just about 30 days annually: Data

Most state assemblies in India sit for just around 30 days a year, data collated by ToI shows.Some states do even worse than that. For those like Punjab and Haryana, the corresponding number is just about 15 days annually.In comparison, the average annual number of sitting days for the Lok Sabha is 63.

While the Lok Sabha sits for more days relative to state legislatures, a number of other countries boast of a far higher number. For example, the US House of Representatives sat for 166 days in 2021 and 163 in 2020. The corresponding number for the US Senate is even higher.The average number for UK’s House of Commons is between the high-140s and the low-150s. High average numbers are also applicable to Japan, Canada, etc.The ToI analysis pertains to the period beween 2012 and 2021.In almost all states for which data was analysed (19), the lowest number of sittings was seen during the two pandemic years. In this matter, Haryana was an exception, having seen its lowest performances in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014.Among state assemblies, Odisha and Kerala boast of the highest average number of sitting days in a year.
