Most definitely not INC’s views: Congress distances itself from Sam Pitroda’s ‘don’t know the threat from China’ remark

Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) chairman Sam Pitroda has once again ignited a political firestorm, this time over his comments on China. The remarks have triggered sharp criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), forcing Congress to clarify that Pitroda’s views do not represent the party’s official stance.

In an interview with the news agency IANS, Pitroda questioned the prevailing perception of China as a threat to India.

“I don’t know what is the threat from China. I think this issue is often blown out of proportion because the US has the habit of defining an enemy,” Pitroda remarked.

He went on to suggest that India needed to shift away from a confrontational mindset, advocating for collaboration and increased communication rather than a command-and-control approach. “To assume that China is the enemy from day one is just not fair, not just to China, but to anybody,” he added.

The BJP wasted no time in responding to Pitroda’s remarks. Party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi strongly condemned the statements, claiming that Pitroda’s comments revealed Congress’s alignment with China.

“The kind of statement given by him is a deep blow to India’s identity, diplomacy, and sovereignty,” Trivedi said.

The BJP has demanded that Congress clarify whether Pitroda’s remarks reflect the party’s views, accusing him of echoing the opinions of billionaire investor George Soros, a figure the BJP often criticises for alleged influence on Indian politics.

BJP leader Ajay Alok took the criticism further, linking Pitroda’s views to Congress’s historic ties with China. “Sam Pitroda is the mentor of Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi has also signed a secret treaty with the People’s Liberation Army of China,” Alok claimed, alleging that Congress’s relationship with China stretches back decades, citing historical figures such as Rajiv Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. However, Congress quickly distanced itself from Pitroda’s comments. General Secretary Jairam Ramesh clarified that Pitroda’s remarks did not reflect the official stance of the Indian National Congress. In a statement posted on X, Ramesh emphasised that the party has consistently raised concerns about the Modi government’s approach to China. “The views reportedly expressed by Mr. Sam Pitroda on China are most definitely NOT the views of the Indian National Congress,” Ramesh wrote, asserting that China remains a major foreign policy, security, and economic challenge for India.

Ramesh further criticised the government, alleging that Parliament had been denied a chance to discuss the “challenges” posed by China, and referred to the party’s most recent statement on the matter, made in January 2025.Congress leader Raashid Alvi also weighed in, reaffirming the party’s position on China. “China was, and still is, an enemy,” he said, underscoring that party leader Rahul Gandhi has consistently spoken out about China’s occupation of Indian land. He further stated, “If someone claims otherwise, it means there’s no need for external enemies when the fire is already burning within the house.”This latest controversy is not the first time Pitroda’s comments have put Congress on the defensive. Previously, his remarks on wealth redistribution and inheritance tax had sparked accusations from the BJP that Congress was seeking to “loot” the public.
