Not in favor of lateral entry, will raise issue before govt: Union Minister Chirag Paswan

Signs of a fissure within the ruling NDA government surfaced on Monday when Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) President and Union Minister Chirag Paswan voiced concerns over the issue of lateral entry into government positions.

Speaking to reporters, Paswan stated that his party opposes lateral entry in government appointments and that he intends to raise the matter with the government.

“My party’s stance on such appointments is absolutely clear. Wherever there are government appointments, the provisions of reservation must be followed. The way this information has come to light is also a matter of concern for me because I am part of this government and have the platform to address these issues. On behalf of my party, we are absolutely not in favor of this. It is completely wrong, and I will raise this matter before the government,” Paswan asserted.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) recently issued a notification to recruit Joint Secretaries, Directors, and Deputy Secretaries through lateral entry. This decision has drawn criticism from opposition parties, who argue that it undermines the reservation rights of OBCs, SCs, and STs.Earlier, on Sunday, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi expressed his concerns regarding the lateral entry of individuals into top government positions, alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is appointing public servants through the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) instead of adhering to the traditional UPSC route.

In a post on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), Gandhi said, “Narendra Modi is attacking the Constitution by recruiting public servants through the ‘Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’ instead of the Union Public Service Commission.”

He added, “The reservation for SC, ST, and OBC categories is being openly taken away by recruiting through lateral entry for key posts in various ministries of the central government.”

Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav also criticised the central government, calling the move a “big conspiracy” against the country.Yadav alleged that lateral entry is a strategy to deprive the PDA (Pichhde, Dalit, and Alpsankhyak) of their rightful reservations and opportunities.
